Yikes
What a day! I woke up and read about the huge scandal for this new memoir by a young white woman who'd said she was raised among gang members when in reality she was a Valley Girl. It really strikes a chord with me because I worked so very hard to be honest in my own book.
Then I rushed off to office hours and then taught for three hours and then rushed to the subway to pick up the kids and then we trained right back uptown for my first reading of Bedtime Stories! That was the good news. The bad news was that two people showed up, my Uncle Billy and my Uncle Herman. A bit later my friend Jamal came by and eventually Cheryl with her new baby. Not a single other person was there. True, it was a rainy day, and early, 6pm, but I had so very many friends who'd said they'd stop by. If Cheryl hadn't come with her amazing little baby I think I would have been really sad. We ended up in Chucky Cheese across the street and Chet was bouncing off the walls. It's his absolute favorite place in the world.
I have another reading next week at Morningside Bookshop, 114th and Broadway. I'll spend part of tomorrow emailing around to try to drum up some sort of crowd.
I'm home now and whupped.

Wow Trey! I wish I could have taken a fast cab from Chicago to your reading yesterday!
Now that you have the FATHER OF THE YEAR blog, too, I'm sure it will be a BIG crowd for the next reading!
Woohoo!
